Response to a sexual video scandal that was published online was not exactly passive among the country’s leadership. The Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodorín Obiang, has even gone out of his way to exercise damage control by issuing a statement geared towards addressing work place etiquette. Images and videos that stemmed from the controversy involved a number of individuals engaging in explicit sexual activity in what appears to be government offices. Consequentially, this acted as a catalyst of large public outcry towards questionable moral and ethical characters of the countries political actors.
Teodorín Obiang, the son of the long serving President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, was uncompromising in his suspension of the workers that were involved in the video shoot. People who act in such a manner should not be allowed to work in government….those people should not be in government, anywhere. There is no space for such conduct whatsoever. Such conduct was partly condoned by the current government. Obiang made sure in his statement that people who are caught doing such acts are in for serious action, advocating the government’s policy of “no nonsense”.
The development is quite alarming for a country like Equatorial Guinea which is known for its conservative social values. Such incidents certainly do not help the politics of any country and more so the institutions of government which have a very important role to play in the progressive development of society.
Though the images on the internet have brought the people to a certain ‘moral’ repulsion, they also have encouraged discourse on the topics of privacy, responsibility and the effectiveness of social networks in making visible these types of actions.
The warning issued by Teodorín Obiang is indicative of the fact that no leader is ever off the radar, and there are actions that have a capacity to tarnish the image of government institutions with irreparable damage.
